Do you know the most common liver diseases? We are talking about their fattening (steatosis). This is a condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver, and the organ gradually ceases to perform its function. In addition to excessive alcohol use, this is usually due to an increased intake of inappropriate food, especially sugars and fats, or a lack of exercise. How to take care of your liver properly so you don’t end up like every fourth European?

Liver – one organ, many functions

The liver performs hundreds of important functions in the body. They are known primarily for their metabolic activity. The first organ that comes into contact with the blood coming from the intestine, therefore everything we eat and drink passes through the liver first. They participate in the metabolism of fats, sugars and proteins. In addition, they are constantly exposed to various foreign substances and microorganisms, and thus have an irreplaceable role in the body’s defenses. In addition, they make bile, store vitamins and minerals, including iron and copper, and secrete some hormones. Last but not least, they participate in the detoxification of the organism – they cleanse the body of various pollutants, medicines, poisons or drugs.

Alcohol is not the only cause of liver damage

No one will probably be surprised by the information that the liver is damaged by excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, consuming a diet rich in animal fats and sugars also has the same effect on them. Fruit sugar, or fructose, can be the most treacherous. This is contained, for example, in various sweetened drinks, but also fruit, fresh juices and smoothies. This can give people the false impression that this is a natural, health-promoting substance. It is not so. Fructose can only be processed by the liver, where fat is produced from it, and its excess can lead to obesity. The disease is typical mainly for obese people, however, obesity is not its condition. Even a thin person who receives an energy-rich diet without adequate physical output is at high risk of developing it. The liver is also damaged by smoking, certain drugs or viruses.

Fatty liver does not have to be final!

Fortunately, the liver has an incredible capacity for regeneration. Therefore, if obesity is addressed in time, there is a great chance for their complete recovery. Treatment consists in removing the provoking cause – most often in a comprehensive lifestyle change, which includes adjusting the diet and increasing physical activity. As part of dietary measures, reducing the intake of fatty foods, limiting the consumption of simple sugars, excluding sweetened beverages, and increasing the supply of fresh vegetables and fiber appear to be the best solutions. Abstinence from alcohol and nicotine is also a matter of course. Physical activity should be regular, ideally several times a week.

Unfortunately, a large number of patients give way during treatment and return to their original lifestyle. Constant motivation and relatively frequent contact with the attending physician is therefore important. Liver health can also be supported by over-the-counter preparations containing essential phospholipids, which have a protective function for the liver.

Fatty liver disease has become a global epidemic in recent years, which is due to relatively little awareness of this serious disease. The disease can occur without obvious symptoms and can often only be identified through blood tests or an ultrasound examination. For this reason, it is crucial not to neglect regular medical examinations, during which the assessment of the condition of the liver also comes into play. In addition, the only effective prevention of their fattening lies in a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise.
