Oral ulcers are painful. Try these methods to relieve oral ulcers
Oral ulcers , commonly known as mouth sores. I believe everyone has suffered from it!
In order to prepare for the medical qualification examination some time ago, I worked late into the night and had no time to cook. I had to rely on takeout for three meals. I am a northerner with a Sichuan stomach. The love spicy food. I have to pour red oil and chili sauce on noodles and rice. If I don’t pay attention, I will get oral ulcers.
It feels good to eat spicy food, but afterwards… afterwards, the corners of my mouth and tongue are covered with oral ulcers. Now it hurts when I drink water, hiss…
Oral ulcers are a common oral disease with a high incidence, a wide range of people affected, and complex causes. Some people even have them once every one or two months.
Although it is not a serious illness, it just makes you eat poorly and sleep poorly. It is not very harmful but extremely insulting.
Due to my professional positioning and eating habits, I have done a lot of research on the treatment of oral ulcers. I can be considered a doctor after suffering from the disease for a long time. Here I would like to share some of my experience in the care and treatment of oral ulcers.
1. What causes oral ulcers?
Oral ulcer is a common ulcerative injury of the oral mucosa, which often occurs on the inside of the lips, tongue, tongue side, buccal mucosa, soft palate, etc. There are many causes of the disease, including local trauma (biting the inner wall of the mouth, biting the tongue), mental stress, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency and changes in hormone levels.
The direct causes are reflected in lifestyle habits:
1. Overwork and lack of sleep
The reason for oral ulcers in many people is lack of sleep. Too little sleep will lead to a decrease in immunity, and the body’s resistance to foreign bacteria will be weakened, making it easy to get oral ulcers.
2. Oral injury
Oral injuries are more common in patients with occlusal problems and those undergoing orthodontic treatment. The former is due to the uncorrected lip and cheek biting posture, which makes it easy to bite the mouth, and the latter is due to the braces worn, which can easily scratch the oral mucosa, and these ulcers will develop into ulcers. If the above two types of people also like to smoke and drink, the ulcers will almost 100% turn into oral ulcers. It is recommended to quit smoking and drinking during the ulcer period.
3. Eating habits
If you love spicy food like me, you are more likely to get mouth ulcers than the average person. Spicy and irritating foods can easily irritate the lining of the mouth and make people get angry. In addition to spicy and hot foods, eating too much orange, lychee, pineapple and other foods can also easily cause mouth ulcers.
4. Mental stress
If you are under too much mental stress or troubled by anxiety for a period of time, your body’s resistance will decrease, giving oral ulcers an opportunity to develop.
Although oral ulcers are an insignificant symptom, frequent ulcers often mean that the body has sounded a red light. Oral ulcers are related to gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, colitis, vitamin B malabsorption and autonomic dysfunction, so friends who often suffer from oral ulcers must find time to go to the hospital for a comprehensive examination.
2. Do occasional oral ulcers require treatment?
Not necessarily. Oral ulcers are self-limiting diseases. Even if they are not treated, they can heal themselves over time. During the ulcer period, maintaining good oral hygiene, supplementing with vitamins and trace elements, eating more fruits and vegetables, and ensuring adequate sleep are all conducive to recovery. It will take at least one week and at most two weeks.
But as a patient with severe oral ulcers, I understand them very well. Just like most people don’t want to wait for 7 days when they have a cold, and will still take cold medicine, the process of waiting for the ulcer to heal itself is also very painful.
When oral ulcers occur, I can’t eat or drink. The wound is painful and I feel very upset. I have to avoid eating spicy, hot, or hard food and dare not open my mouth and can’t speak clearly. I even have to avoid the wound when brushing my teeth.
Therefore, for patients, quick pain relief and early recovery are their biggest demands. And this effect can indeed be achieved with the help of some drugs.
3. Good things to accelerate the repair of oral ulcers?
Recommended criteria for treating oral ulcers:
1. Rapid pain relief (long-term pain will make people unable to work and live normally, and the most direct physical pain is the first demand to be solved.)
2. Shorten the self-healing period, preferably take effect on the same day (suitable products can not only relieve pain, but also speed up ulcer repair)
3. Easy to buy, available in local pharmacies or nationwide
In fact, when it comes to relieving oral ulcers, in addition to the ingredients of the medicine, its material and method of use will also have an important impact on the effect.
1. Spray type
For example, there is a drug that is very popular among the public for treating oral ulcers. It mainly contains watermelon frost , which has the effects of reducing swelling, relieving pain, and promoting fluid production and moistening the throat. When the oral ulcer is small, pour a little watermelon frost on it, and it will basically heal in two or three days.
However, since the method of use is to pour the medicine on the wound, you need to squeeze the bottle to spray some medicine powder, often the medicine nozzle will be sprayed out when you exert too much force, and only a little can reach the wound. The effect is originally good, but it has to be used repeatedly for it to work quickly. Difficulty in applying medicine +10,000!
A good medicine has been delayed by anti-human design, please urge for a revision!
2. Gel type

The gel is actually what I recommend most, because the gel form can achieve the effect of wound recovery by continuously adhering to the oral ulcer wound and isolating the wound from erosion by oral flora.
The biggest advantage of oral gel is that it sticks firmly! Unlike powder, it cannot enter the wound surface and is dilute by saliva after entering. After all, only when it sticks firmly, sticks for a long time, can the active ingredients maintain the concentration and release, and the effect lasts for a long time, so that it can heal quickly.
Another advantage of oral gel is that it can be use anywhere. Powders and patches are not easy to use deep in the mouth, but gel is apply to the wound with a cotton swab. It can be use even on uneven areas such as the tongue/lip frenulum, pharynx, etc. That can be say that it can be apply to any area.
It would be better if the water-soluble gel was made with chitosan , polyvinyl alcohol , glycerol and menthol as the main ingredients and a bioadhesive thermosensitive polymer material as the carrier.
My experience is that when the gel is quickly and directly covered on the wound surface, it can block the erosion of oral bacteria. It doesn’t hurt after applying it, and I can talk and eat as usual.
3. Powder
Among the powders, there are also products that are prepared by ancient methods and have been passed down for hundreds of years. Its active ingredients are indigo , alum , and borneol , which are also very effective in clearing away heat, healing sores, reducing swelling and relieving pain.
The method of use is to use a cotton swab dipped in the powder and apply it on the wound. It is more convenient to use than watermelon frost spray.
But the powder also has some problems. Its adhesion is too poor . Because of the problem of constant saliva secretion. The powder is take away by saliva before it can be use, and the efficacy is dilute and the effect is greatly reduce. I always use cotton swabs to stick a little bit, and I always pull my lips with my hands. The experience is -100.
3. Patches
It can be think of as a special band-aid for the oral cavity. Compared with sprays and powders, patches are much more convenient. A small patch on the wound will significantly reduce the pain, and a few patches can make the ulcer surface begin to heal. And it does not affect eating and drinking after applying it. The advantage is that it isolates the ulcer and quickly relieves pain.
However, it should be noted that some of the patches currently in common use are hormone drugs, and there are still many contraindications for them. Patients with severe hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, epilepsy and gastrointestinal ulcers are not recommended to use them. Hormone drugs are not completely unusable, but long-term use is still not recommended.
Finally, I want to talk about the taste. From my own experience, I have used both watermelon frost and powder products. The bitter taste is too strong. If children use it, they may not be very obedient. If it is a gel with a little mint flavor, the acceptance will be much higher. In terms of the effect of use, the gel and the patch are similar, and both take effect immediately.
Oral ulcers are still very painful, so everyone should eat healthily, eat less irritating and spicy foods, keep a happy mood, and maintain good oral hygiene… This is the only way to avoid ulcer problems and live a happy life!
