Beware of 3 types of abnormal menstruation, one may be cancer!
There are some “seemingly normal” menstruations that occur every month, but upon closer inspection, each cycle is different. They are Abnormal menstruation. If left untreated, they may cause serious or even irreversible consequences.
What is normal menstruation ?
Normally, the normal menstrual cycle is 21-35 days, the menstrual period is 2-7 days, and the amount of bleeding each time is about 5-80ml.
Of course, these are only the majority of cases. There are also quite a few women of childbearing age who have their own menstrual patterns. Some have their periods every two months, and in extreme cases even only once a year. Although this is different from the usual situation, it is also normal.
But whether in most cases or in a few cases, normal menstruation has the following common characteristics:
Regular menstrual cycle: The interval between two menstrual periods is fixed;
The Regular menstrual flow: The amount of menstruation is about the same each time, not more at one time and less at another.
Regular menstrual duration: The duration of menstrual period is about the same, not longer at one time and shorter at another.
What is abnormal menstruation?
Abnormal menstruation refers to abnormal menstrual cycle, menstrual volume, or duration of menstruation. For example, the following situations may occur:
The original 28-day menstrual cycle suddenly becomes 20 days; or it suddenly extends to 40 days; or there is amenorrhea.
Originally, only 3 packs of sanitary napkins were needed for one menstrual period, but this time 5 packs of sanitary napkins are needed, which means the menstrual flow is large; or the menstrual flow is dripping and the flow is small.
The menstrual period that originally ended in 7 days was extended to 10 days.
In other words, irregular menstruation is mainly compared with your previous regularity.
3 ways to disguise as “normal menstruation”
The following three seemingly normal menstruation may actually be dangerous, so you must be vigilant.
1. Ectopic pregnancy
For women who have sexual life, if their menstruation has always been regular, but suddenly there is “menstrual disorder” at one time, for example, the last menstrual flow is much less than usual, they should be alert.
If you continue to have vaginal bleeding or pain in one side of your lower abdomen, you must go to the hospital for treatment, as this may indicate an ectopic pregnancy with rupture and bleeding, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
2. Polycystic ovary syndrome
Many women with PCOS complain: “My menstruation has never been normal since the beginning!” There are various types of menstrual disorders in PCOS patients, such as infrequent menstruation, amenorrhea, frequent menstruation, irregular vaginal bleeding. A small number of patients have regular menstruation, but this type of menstruation is not necessarily accompanied by ovulation.
In addition to menstrual disorders, polycystic patients are often accompanied by infertility, acne, hair loss, hirsutism, weight gain and other conditions.
Not only that, if not controlled, polycystic ovary syndrome will increase the risk of long-term complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Polycystic ovary syndrome often begins in adolescence. Its negative impact on women’s health lasts throughout their lives and can affect multiple systems throughout the body. Therefore, if menstruation is often irregular, you must go to the hospital for a check-up.
3. Excessive endometrial hyperplasia
Don’t be careless about this disease and think that it is just the thickening of the endometrium. You should know that excessive endometrial hyperplasia is a precursor to endometrial cancer. When the endometrial glands proliferate abnormally, it will gradually progress from simple endometrial hyperplasia to complex hyperplasia to atypical endometrial hyperplasia (precancerous lesions) and finally endometrial cancer.
Fortunately, endometrial lesions usually have more obvious symptoms. The most common one is “menstrual irregularities”, which manifests as irregular menstruation – whether it is the menstrual cycle, menstrual period, or menstrual volume, as long as one of them is different from the usual situation, and it happens not just once, but similar situations occur for several consecutive months; or intermenstrual bleeding occurs.
In addition, excessive endometrial hyperplasia may also cause vaginal discharge and B-ultrasound findings of uneven endometrial thickening or mass occupation.
It is worth mentioning that with the improvement of living standards, people’s lifestyles have become more Westernized, with more and more fast food, fried foods, and high-fat diets, and the incidence of endometrial cancer has also increased year by year.
Therefore, if the above situations occur, you should be vigilant and go to the hospital in time. If the examination result shows “endometrial hyperplasia”, you must not be careless. You must cooperate with the doctor, follow the doctor’s treatment, follow the doctor’s instructions closely and take measures to prevent recurrence.
Every woman should pay attention to her menstrual cycle. If there is any abnormality from the normal menstrual cycle, it is recommended to seek medical attention in time to prevent any problem.
